Nylon and polyester are the two most popular synthetic fibers for carpeting; one is known for superior strength and the other one for excellent stain resistance.

Carpet fiber is the material from which the yarns are made, making it the very foundation of a rug and the most crucial decision you'll make. It affects appearance, performance, and longevity.

Feel free to come into our carpet store, where you'll see an assortment of fibers, including nylon, polyester, New Zealand wool, Triexta blend, Kashmere, Primus Durasoft, SmartStrand, and more.

About nylon

Nylon stands up to wear very well, and it's the ideal choice for a soft surface floor covering in homes with large, active families with kids and pets. It’s also resilient, meaning that it bounces back to its original appearance after compression, such as stepping, standing, or having furniture legs on it for long periods. It's also absorbent, but when protectants are applied, it becomes ultra stain resistant.

About polyester

Polyester is a hydrophobic fiber, meaning that it doesn't absorb; the stain resistance, therefore, is inherent. Because it's considered less resilient than nylon, it's best for homes with one or two adults and no kids.

Both nylon and polyester can be eco-friendly, soft, and come in various styles. Although nylon can be more expensive, you will also see it at different price points. Like anything, though, when comparing, be sure they are all of equal quality because, otherwise, the results will be inaccurate.

Other commonly chosen fibers are wool, which is natural and soft with good soil resistance, the budget-friendly and stain-resistant olefin (polypropylene), mainly associated with the Berber (looped) style. Triexta is relatively new to the market but already has established a reputation for strength and permanent stain resistance built into the fiber.
